Day 2
Sao Paulo opens up. Today we appreciated some modern Brazilian art, the best in my eyes was the Japanese immigrant work of the 60's, though Luis Hermano had an interesting exhibition on. Typically in walking to the art Luz district we got lost, however since then we've navigated our way round ok.
We've decided to leave Sampa one day early and fly to Manaus on Sunday night. I'll be sad to leave in some ways but its probably the right move. Not speaking Portuguese at all is still holding us back in such a vast, unmanagable place.
Saw an amazing panoramic view from a sky-scraper roof in the city. For as far as one could see through the ever thickening smog SP is a mass of sky-scrapers and high building, all centering around nothing. It was incredible to see, hopefully the photos came out.
On leaving we were recommended 'Vila Madeline' for bars and going out. We're here now and have only found a small restaurant. Nobody speaks English and we're struggling, however 'Cica', the owner, has struggled with us through an hour of patchily understood conversation, a far cry from the attitude of the gallery workers who suspiciously followed us around. She is driving us off to the bars now.
And here we are, my normally illegible writing suffering under the influence of a few beers. The lady Cica was wonderful; humouring us and then driving us round the whole bar part of the district. In the first one we walked straight into a massive family birthday party, inadvertently sitting in the middle of their table. In Brazil, tohugh, this is just the start of a friendship. Now we know who's birthday they were celebrating at least. We felt we'd outstayed our welcome and nomadically moved around a few bars. Now we've imbibed a couple more beers and are sat next to stage where traditional Brazilian music is being performed by two people. We were upstairs but for some reason, security and barstaff escorted us down into a prim location. Everywhere you turn here everyone has yours and all other peoples interests at heart. PS There are three people playing, I missed the guy with a tambourine.
